You have to be terribly stupid to believe that Sony thought it was a good movie in “Bad Boys for Life”.  It’s the release of SmackDab in the middle of the cinematic wasteland which is January, the month when bad movies die in a very deceptive way, never to be heard again.  Hale, even the latest pigeon from the Bell-Air cartoon, "Spice in Disease" was released during the Oscar season.  Of course you were expecting a little more release date love for the third entry of the hit franchise that will star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as reckless cops with reckless banners and parallel damage odd dolls reckless cops expected above all, its predecessors were released in both April and July respectively.  Directed by Bay  .  Bay's apparent absence added to my suspicions that the studio had little faith in this feature

Surprisingly, there is nowhere near as bad as hinted at as the opening day schedule of “Bad Boys for Life”.  It’s the best of the three films, offering corrections in previous installments in some weird ways.  In contrast to the original, it has some depth in the female characters;  Unlike the second one, it’s not an awful mix of exceptions to “Freebie and Bean” and “Scarface” whose running time felt about 600 hours long.  This time, detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowry (Will Smith) are more aware of how much bail they have lost, although they will have to be constantly reminded of his execution later.  I didn’t buy this “Kinder, Mild Bad Boys” shot for a minute, but that doesn’t mean I was annoyed.  I had to appreciate the weakness of these choices when the climax exploded and the telenovela-level melodrama began to set at the top of the songplay, while nationalizing ideas from "Gemini Man" in public.

From the trailer, Field opens the sequence on a fast-paced porch, using Mike and Marcus in their general disregard for innocents to pursue what appears to be the latest Miami criminal to follow, with all the stunts to get Marcus to the hospital for his granddaughter's birth.  Now calling himself a grandfather - or "pop-pop", Marcus re-evaluates his law enforcement career.  Unlike his hothead partner, he has a wife and family and wants to spend more time shooting the hundreds of criminals he is shooting.  In the words of the better friend Cop photo, Marcus realized that he was "getting too old for this shit."  Mike tries to change his mind.

Meanwhile, something is being made in Mexico and I mean literally.  A self-proclaimed bruja named Isabel Aritas (Cate del Castillo) reunites with her son Armando (Jacob Scipio) to execute a deadly, "lamb's mute".  It is part of a plot to assassinate the people who imprisoned Israel and her husband.  One of those unfortunate people is Ditt.  Lori, whom Isabel had last ordered to kill her son "so that he could do harm."  Castillo played his role with the utmost determination, so much so that he only wanted to go after his enemies, but the whole Dine character trait worried me that Steven Siegel was going to do the embarrassing thing for the "Bad boys for Life" Browser.  "Marked for Death" did for Voodoo.

Armando fulfills his mother's wishes and enemies while being fairly behind in "motorcycle gear" outside of "Gemini Man".  He violates his management order, but first follows Mike.  Subsequent sequences of this attack have tried to persuade the film with some real sensitive parts, and Lawrence must be credited for reminding us that he can navigate the dramatic scene with conviction.  Screenwriters Chris Bremner, Peter Craig, and Joe Carnahan use this plot development to soften the cause of the aforementioned summary of collateral damage in the action scene, although there is enough violence for strict R-ratings.

Followers of the series will find a few Easter eggs hidden throughout.  My audience laughed heartily at one, unfortunately, reminding me of a bad scene in “The Bad Boys Second”.  Despite a span of 25 years between this film and the original, several cast members also returned.  In addition to Smith and Lawrence, the always-welcome Joe Pantoliano is back, like Captain Howard, the screaming police chief, whose priorities have been intensified by the recklessness of his best cops.  Like Lawrence he’s very funny, he finds some new notes in the on-screen personality he’s been playing since his debut at “House Party”.

Lest I forget that, like so many more action movies featuring old stars, this movie gives us a crew of young newcomers whose knowledge of computers leaps into the hands of their seniors.  Here it features AMMO, a new unit run by Mike’s old flame Rita (Paula Nuez) and features Vanessa Hudgens from “High School Musical” and “Spring Breakers”.  Their use of drones and hacking has been ridiculed by old school police officers, so it’s only a matter of time before the AMMO is forced to use real ammunition to finish their work.  As the AMMO prepares for battle, Rita and Mike create some believable ROM-less sparks.

Perhaps the only surprise in “Bad Boys For Life” is its desire to embroil us in an emotional stake for Mike and Marcus. Not in the superficial, buddy-buddy, bromantic way you’d expect, but in a sincerely earnest way that is kind of off-putting when you remember how Bay’s films avoided any semblance of warmth. Dare I say that directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah steal a page from the “old man’s lament” playbook that buoyed "Pain and Glory" and “The Irishman,” and that Smith and Lawrence do their best to try and pull it off. I had a “too much, too little, too late” reaction to these attempts to fully humanize Mike and Marcus, but your mileage may vary here. If nothing else, I appreciated the attempt.

What I didn’t appreciate was the ridiculous, Marvel-style post-credits sequence that sets up a potential “Bad Boys 4: The Return of Thanos” or something like that. What about all that talk of “one last time” between Mike and Marcus? We didn’t need this time, let alone the next. But I digress. While I’m marginally not recommending this one, I’ll let you in on a little secret: If this were on cable at 3am, I’d watch the hell out of it.
